Avatar clearly etched its name in history as it held the seat of the highest-grossing film for quite some time. It has been announced a long time ago that it will be having a sequel, now, the time has come. Avatar: The Way of Water has finally arrived. Avatar: The Way of Water features Pandora about a decade after the events of the first film and Jake and Neytiri finally have their family to raise. Now, they must defend their children at all cost and save each other as a new threat looms in Pandora. After more than a decade of wait, the sequel is finally here! It has been a constant question as to why Avatar 2 took so long to produce because the hype can only be held for quite some time, right? Even the director of the film, James Cameron, has been worried that with the hype dying down, the sequels might flop, but given this budget, it cannot!
How Much Did it Cost to Make Avatar: The Way of Water?
The budget to create Avatar: The Way of Water is no surprise considering the amount it cost the first film to make: it is a whopping $250 million and each of the four sequels combined is estimated to cost $1 billion according to a report from Deadline. Well, considering the perfectionist director, and high-end tech used for the film, it would really reach this much a cost. Not to mention its start-studded cast, Avatar: The Way of Water would really have a high price tag.
Is Avatar: The Way of Water the Most Expensive Movie Ever Made?
It is among the most expensive but it is not on the top of the list, though. Currently, the holder of the title of the most expensive film ever made belongs to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which costs a staggering $422 million, followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron at $386 million, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End with $362 million. Holding the fourth spot is the film that toppled down Avatar as the highest-grossing film ever, Avengers: Endgame with $356 million, and its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War is at $316 million. What is the Budget for Avatar 3?
Being one of the four films under the $1 billion budget, it is also expected that the film will have the same price tag of production costs as that of Avatar: The Way of Water. What was the Budget for the Original Avatar Movie?
The original Avatar film has a budget of $237 million and considering that it was released in 2009, such an amount is already a really high one. With the re-release of the film, it added another $9 million, having a sum total of $246 million, quite near to that of the budget of Avatar: The Way of Water.
Why is Avatar so Expensive to Film?
For the first film, 3D was a rather new thing, and having Avatar in 3D, makes it an expensive one to start. By that time, it was one of the highest qualities ever used in film. What makes it more expensive is the process it takes to produce the film: it is heavily latched on CGI for the actors, visual effects are needed for the locations, and knowing that the director, Cameron, is into technology, he even had equipment invented. Avatar: The Way of Water, considering that some scenes are set underwater, requires more heavy-duty equipment that Cameron even invested in a purpose-built submarine. Surely, this tech piles up in the cost of the production of the film on top of the pay of the stars to act and of all the behind-the-scenes crew. Would you watch Avatar: The Way of Water and all the other sequels? Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters on December 16, 2022.
