What Do the Darkness Devil’s Astronauts Mean?
Fujimoto has established that the Darkness Devil embodies the primal fear of darkness and the unknown danger of a pitch-black environment. Denji and the other devil hunters are transported to Hell courtesy of the Hell Devil, and the Darkness Devil is shown haunting them. What makes his introduction straight-up creepy is the shot of a row of astronauts cut into two halves. They are shown praying in silence as their intestines are spread out all over the ground. The astronauts are shown in a firm praying position, indicating submission to a superior being, and in this case, it is the Darkness Devil. The imagery of astronauts is also likely to symbolize that nothing can beat the darkness and void of space. Moreover, showing astronauts in a prayer position symbolizes the unforgiving nature of space and its darkness. What do you think about the astronauts before the arrival of the Darkness Devil?
