Hideo Kojima took to Twitter to admit that he thoroughly enjoyed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, going as far as bingeing the entire series. “I just watched ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners’ in one sitting! Awesome! Great! Under the recent domestic anime situation, there was a feeling that famous Japanese studios were consumed by the overseas market, but not this one! This is a miracle of squeezing the trigger to the world!” Kojima wrote.
The Metal Gear creator then added that the anime reminded him of a 1990 cyberpunk anime classic. “For my generation, the world view and visuals remind me of Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s ‘Cyber City OEDO 808’,” Kojima wrote. Kazutaka Kodaka also enjoyed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The Danganronpa creator admitted to loving the anime series and then suggested another show that fans would also enjoy. “I like the anime ‘Cyberpunk’. Including the difficult setting,” Kodaka wrote. “If you liked it, you might also like ‘Akudama Drive’!” We’re loving the idea of game creators supporting the anime based on a video game by CD Projekt Red. Hopefully, the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners means we’ll be getting more well-made anime adaptations of video games in the future. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners serves as a prequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and follows David, a street kid who gets caught up in the dangerous side of Night City as he tries to become an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk. The anime series is now streaming on Netflix.
