The series ending with Season 3 was not surprising given that the manga source material by ONE ended a couple of years ago. Though many fans noted that an anime adaptation completing its source material’s story is a rarity at this point. Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for Mob Psycho 100 III.
Rarity of Proper Anime Endings
While not applicable to all shows, it’s common knowledge among the anime community that an anime adaptation is typically done to promote its manga or light novel source material. Essentially, anime shows often function as big advertisements for the source manga or novel. After all, it’s proven that many manga/novels get increased sales after the airing of an anime series adaptation. Because of this, many anime shows don’t adapt the full story completely, or the anime can deviate heavily from the source material’s story. Such is the case with a lot of isekai anime, as well as some shonen shows like Soul Eater. Mob Psycho 100 is one of the few exceptions, with fans noting on Twitter and Reddit how lucky we are to get a full adaptation of the manga, all while keeping the animation quality and story at a high quality. In a recent Reddit thread, Mob Psycho 100’s ending was compared favorably to other well-regarded anime such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Fruits Basket, Death Note, and others. Mob Psycho 100 Finale Reactions
Fittingly, the series ended with Reigen finally confessing to Mob that he has no powers. While Mob might’ve already known this deep inside, the fact that Reigen told him honestly helped Mob regain control of himself. Aside from Reigen, Dimple also proved to be instrumental in helping Mob gain control of his powers. Reigen and Dimple being the two people that helped Mob was fitting in the eyes of many fans, as these are the two characters that have been with Mob since the beginning of the series. Mob may not have gotten everything that he wanted (as he was rejected by Tsubomi), but pretty much everyone got a happy ending, delighting fans. Though more than being a happy finale, fans praised how perfectly the series ended in terms of how the characters finally became honest with each other and how they grew from the experience. Given how great the ending is, it won’t be surprising to see Mob Psycho 100 be considered one of the best modern shonen anime of all time. And while it ended perfectly, it remains to be seen if the series will be revisited in a future anime or manga project.
