In a recent interview with Variety, Sarah Aubrey, the head of originals at HBO Max, shared some details about The Penguin where she revealed that the upcoming series will fill in the gaps between the events of the first film and the sequel that is currently in development. “Penguin will sit immediately after the end of The Batman and temporally before the events of the second movie. The show will come out in between the two movies,” she said. “Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say.”
Aubrey also noted that the series will be more “street level” considering the grounded scope of the story surrounding the criminal underworld of Gotham City and it will give the audience an opportunity to get to know more of the character over the course of eight episodes. “The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can. As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions,” she added. “It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level, because he’s not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.” Based on the details that we’re hearing so far, the series sounds very promising, especially after the wonderful first impression that Farrell made on the role during the first film. It is exciting to see what else the series has in store as it expands Reeves’ Batman universe even further.
