In an interview for TV Insider, Jacob talk about his take on adaptations, “Anna Rice’s books are their own thing and I feel like, if you’re gonna adapt a work like that, then you kind of have to do something that justifies its existence as a show or like, any different format, because the books are still there.” The actor expresses that he wants the people to read the books themselves to pay tribute to their original source material.
“I personally don’t enjoy direct adaptation,” Jacob adds, “But I think we’re very faithful to at least the feelings and the characters in the book.” As for Sam, “Creative liberty is a complicated concept, because I think, with any adaptation, it’s seen through the lens of the next person who’s creating it.” To him, the author made this extraordinary world which allowed Show Creator Rolin Jones to interpret her world, her vision, and her language by ‘creating his own thing.’
“It’s more about the essence of the show and these characters.” Sam adds in terms of the difficulty in translating a book into a television series, “You need to find the private moments the characters have. It’s more about finding the characters.”
This 2022 series did not shy away from portraying the vampires into exactly that—a love story between Louis and Lestat. In fact, the actors themselves mention it in the interview, too.
“It’s important to honor what was written,” Sam says, “That’s why a lot of people love these stories. Their love story exists and it’s a complicated love story and they’re complicated monsters who are in love. It would be a real shame if we didn’t honor that.”
