Is The Good Nurse Based on a True Story?

The Good Nurse is based on a book written by Charles Graeber of the same title. But the complete title of the book is The Good Nurse: A True Story Of Medicine, Madness and Murder. While the book talks about the real story of serial killer Charles Cullen, the film is a dramatization of the events that transpired. However, the facts from the murders are all included in the film.

What is The Good Nurse About?

The official synopsis from Netflix reads: “Suspicious that her colleague is responsible for a series of mysterious patient deaths, a nurse risks her own life to uncover the truth.” As mentioned, it is based on the murder spree done by nurse-turned-serial killer, Charles Cullen (played by Eddie Redmayne). Cullen has confessed to murdering up to 40 patients in New Jersey throughout his 16-year career as a nurse. But it’s possible that there could be more victims unaccounted for. Apparently, Cullen killed his victims by giving them lethal dosages of insulin and other medications.

Apart from exposing Cullen’s crimes, the movie highlights the great lengths that Amy Loughren (played by Jessica Chastaine) went through to catch her colleague. The film also reveals the system that allowed Cullen’s crimes to slip for such a long time period. In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Lindholm said: “When I read the book, I realised that it wasn’t just another serial-killer movie. It was a portrayal of a system that didn’t stop the serial killer, and the nurse who did.”
