As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will not be “moving forward and is considered dead in its current incarnation.” Wonder Woman 3 is not the only film that was cancelled by Warner Bros. Back in August, the studio revealed that they will no longer be releasing Batgirl despite the movie already being in post-production status. And that’s not the only project the new CEO of Warner Bros decided to shelve. Other projects that were canceled include Time Traveler’s Wife, Strange Adventures, Batman: Caped Crusader, and many more.
Why Did Warner Bros Cancel Wonder Woman 3?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently putting together their plans for the DCU’s future, which will be approved by Warner Bros.’ CEO, David Zaslav. Patty Jenkins allegedly submitted her treatment for the third Wonder Woman installment, which was co-written by Geoff Johns. Unfortunately, the two new DCU co-leads, Warner Bros. co-chairs and co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy told Jenkins that “as [the project] stood… [it] did not fit in with the new (but still unfolding plans.” Many can’t help but wonder if the decision to cancel Wonder Woman 3 were related to costs. But as insiders reveal, costs were not considered a factor.
When Did Gal Gadot First Play Wonder Woman?
Gal first filled portrayed the role of Wonder Woman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. A year later, her first solo Wonder Woman film was released. Both movies were met with positive reception from viewers. In fact, many claimed that Gal’s first Wonder Woman film was one of the best movies from DCU to date. Unfortunately, Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984 did not live up to the hype that the first films created. Because of the poor reception of Justice League, Zack Snyder was removed from the franchise. Meanwhile, Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 just didn’t do as well as the first film. Despite this, a third Wonder Woman film still got green-lit. The project, however, never got a release date announcement. And now, this film has been shelved indefinitely.
What Does This Cancellation Mean for Gal Gadot?
Right now, there is no further announcement on the studio’s plans for future Wonder Woman films or Gal’s portrayal of the heroine. In a bittersweet tweet, Gal thanked her fans for the success of her role: “A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman.I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU.The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.”
The actress did not discuss any future plans for the heroine.
