One of the best bits about the MCU special is the introduction of a new character named Cosmo. Of course, longtime readers of the comics are very much aware who this space dog is and most of them quickly noticed the alterations director James Gunn made to the character’s MCU counterpart.You see, Cosmo has always been depicted as a male dog in various media. However, Gunn decided to gender-swap the adorable fellow and go with the original inspiration for the character, a Soviet space dog named Laika who happens to be female. When a fan pointed out how the character’s gender has been changed in the MCU, Gunn explained his decision and said: “Cosmo is based on Laika, a female Soviet space dog who died in orbit in 1957 - I’m just going back to the original source material.” Well, one thing about him is that he sure knows his stuff.
