Deadline has reported that Emmy-winning actor Brendan Gleeson is joining the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux. The details regarding his role in the follow-up installment are being kept under wraps at the moment. Besides Phoenix and Gaga, Zazie Beetz was also tapped to join the ensemble reprising her role from the first film.
Production for the sequel is expected to begin this December in Los Angeles. Besides returning to helm the film, Phillips is also co-writing the screenplay with Scott Silver. So far, the details of the plot of the second film are unknown although it is believed to have musical elements and will be set mostly in Arkham Asylum.
Gleeson’s casting in the sequel comes as his upcoming film The Banshees of Inisherin is hitting the festival circuit in the next coming weeks. He is known for playing Alastar Moody in the Harry Potter films and has recently starred in The Tragedy of Macbeth and the limited series The Comey Rule where he played Donald Trump.
This is certainly exciting casting news since Gleeson is a wonderful and respected actor and it’s always great to have him be involved in a project like this. It would be curious to see what kind of role will he play whether it’s an original new character or someone familiar from the comics.
