In a report by Oricon, Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s BD/DVD sales broke the first-week record in 2022. This means the film’s Blu-ray and DVD release sold even higher than My Hero Academia and Girls und Panzer, the previous record holders.
The film’s new sales record is impressive, though not surprising given how successful its theatrical run was. Currently, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the sixth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time worldwide. It has a total worldwide gross of USD 196 million, driven by successful screenings in its home country of Japan, as well as the US. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is an anime film by MAPPA that’s based on a single-volume manga of the same name by Gege Akutami. It is a prequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen TV anime and is specifically set one year before the show’s events. Originally entitled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, the manga was serialized in Jump GIGA. Soon after the release of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, it was retitled Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Its story follows Yuta Okkotsu, a 16-year-old high school student that’s haunted by a cursed spirit. This spirit was borne out of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto who died in an accident. While Rika protects, she does so violently, killing those who bully him. Soon, Satoru Gojo discovers this and invites Yuta to the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. There, he meets Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda. Also making an appearance in the movie is Suguru Geto, Gojo’s friend who turned into a major series antagonist. While its story features a lot of references to the series, it functions as a standalone story, making it a good entry point for those that are new to the series.
For more specific numbers, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 sold 30,000 and 28,000 copies for its standard and deluxe editions, respectively. With these, the film became the top one and two in the Oricon Weekly DVD ranking. The same happened in the Blu-ray charts as the movie sold over 65,000 and 27,000 copies of its deluxe and standard edition Blu-rays, respectively. This made it take the top one and two spots in the ranking as well. These Blu-ray and DVD releases are available in Japanese only. For those who want to see the movie in English, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
