In the first episode of Loki, the Time-Keepers have been introduced by Miss Minutes as the all-knowing beings responsible for creating the Sacred Timeline, a reorganized timeline, after a multiversal war happened when various unique timelines fought for supremacy which destroyed everything. The Time-Keepers preserve and protect the timeline by keeping people on the path within. Miss Minutes added that some people’s paths veer off, the variants, resulting to a possible nexus event which could cause madness around the Sacred Timeline and could lead to another multiversal war, and in their efforts to prevent this, the Time-Keepers created the Time Variance Authority complete with their workers such as the Minutemen, Chronomonitors, and the likes of Agent Mobius. The TVA corrects it by erasing the branched timeline and resetting it, then apprehending the person responsible for it. These variants face trials before the TVA and they are asked on how they plead where they could be eradicated from existence by “pruning.”
Who are the Time-Keepers in Loki?
The Time-Keepers are, as mentioned by Miss Minutes, the creators of the TVA. They are a triumvirate of hooded beings who keep the Scared Timeline in one place by eradicating the branched timelines made either intentionally or accidentally by those within it. Later in the episode, when Loki alleged that the Avengers time traveled, it was revealed that they were, in fact, meant to do so. In Marvel Comics, these so-called Time-Keepers were made by the last remaining TVA director during the end times. They were given the responsibility of keeping the Sacred Timeline to protect and preserve it in the prevention of the end of time as we know it. They rarely appear to mortals. Two of them look masculine while the other seems feminine. They were associated to Immortus, a supervillain who travels through time. Immortus had various troubles through time and the Time-Keepers deemed it fit to have him as a prisoner and as a student that they taught him about the timelines, even giving him monitoring on a section of time. (Not so wise a move, right?) Well, Immortus, when younger, went by the name Kang the Conqueror. (Familiar, eh?) It seems that Marvel is on their way to introducing another big bad through the Loki series and it would a huge deal to have the Time-Keepers in the MCU considering that they could lead it to Kang the Conqueror. However, the series also teased another possible big bad, Mephisto, when a kid in a chapel pointed to a devil on the stained glass to be the perpetrator in killing off Minutemen. Whoever the next big bad is could lead the whole Phase Four of the MCU in havoc and it is highly possible that the Time-Keepers, though their intention of preserving the Sacred Timeline seemed to have worked through the years, could also make way for another villain in the making, making the MCU more and more complex than it already is.
