Speaking recently with Matthew Belloni on The Town podcast, Marvel Studios executive and producer Nate Moore was asked about their decision to turn Armor Wars into a movie. He revealed that the change was made as a result of “big ideas” that are “too big” for a TV series format. “Yeah, I mean in that case, there were some great ideas that were coming out for that show but that, to be quite honest, felt too big for that show,” he responded. When Belloni asked a follow-up question on whether the decision was made because of budgetary or storytelling reasons, he responded that both factored it on the changes since their ideas would be too cost-prohibitive if they’ll do it as a TV series given that the budget is not on the same level as feature films.
“Kind of both. Kind of conceptually and from… Our Disney+ shows are awesome and we love them, but the budgets are not the same as the features, that’s not secret,” Moore explained. “And when you’re talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors, and Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors, and the legacy of Tony Stark, that became cost-prohibitive to do as a show.” He also added, “And we realized as a feature, not only can we get into some of the beautiful imagery that is from publishing and there’s certainly an Armor Wars run, but also there’s ways then to leverage the ideas of that movie that affect other movies down the line. So it becomes a multiplication really of, once you figure out what is cool about something.” Considering the nature of the story and the fact that it is an Iron Man-esque film that would require a lot of visual effects work, it is understandable that they ended up turning it into a feature film and it’s also a major upgrade since it is also an opportunity to give James Rhodes the overdue spotlight that he deserves. It’s exciting to see what “big ideas” they have in store for the film.
