James Gunn has long hinted that Vol. 3 will include Rocket’s origin story. With him as a baby in the trailer, we already had glimpses of how the narrative might unfold. MCU fans are both expressing their enthusiasm and worrying over Rocket’s wide participation.
Another shot shown in the trailer is of Rocket hugging his comic book girlfriend and soulmate, Lylla. Lylla is also a genetically modified animal, an otter rather than a raccoon. Despite being a minor character, Lylla might play a significant role in Rocket’s backstory.
The trailer also featured the debut of Chukwudi Iwuji’s villain, the High Evolutionary. It also hints at Peter Quill’s prolonged agony following the death and reappearance of his beloved Gamora.
Gunn has previously declared that his goal for the last Guardians movie was to give Rocket a proper send-off, and fans are still yet to know if that means death or rebirth.

“The reason why I needed to finish this is because I love the character of Rocket more than any other character I’ve ever dealt with before, and I needed to finish his story, and that is what Volume 3 is about,” said the director.
Gunn also revealed the filming process for Vol. 3 was surprisingly difficult, calling it as ‘torture.’ He said, “The movie is so emotional, but it’s been a real joy making it.”
The studios have initially released a holiday special on Disney+ featuring the Guardians that is expected to set the tone for Vol. 3. It highlights Mantis and Drax stealing Kevin Bacon to cheer up Peter.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit the theaters on May 5, 2023.
