Oda shared his thoughts on seeing the early footage of the live-action series in his Jump Festa message to fans. While he did not go into any specifics, he had nothing but praise for what he‘s seen so far.
Eiichiro Oda’s Involvement in the One Piece Live-Action Series
Netflix is not new to live-action adaptations of popular anime, though these typically don’t involve the original creator heavily. For instance, Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe was only a creative consultant for Netflix’s live-action show. But for One Piece, Oda is heavily involved in the show’s production. In fact, he serves as one of the show’s Executive Producers, which means many of the creative decisions in the series should be overseen by him. Recently, Netflix Original Series Director Ted Biaselli went into detail about Oda’s involvement in the show. Biaselli shared that the production team had a lot of back-and-forth with Oda. He also mentioned how Oda had a clear vision for the story that he wanted the live-action adaptation to reflect. We’ve yet to see how Oda’s heavy involvement will translate into the show, but many fans think of this as great news. After all, Oda signing off on the project means the show has a big chance of being good, which can’t be said for other live-action adaptations. Oda’s First Impressions
Oda did not appear at Jump Festa 2023 last weekend, though he did share a special message to fans where he addressed the future of the manga, the upcoming Odyssey video game, and the live-action adaptation. Specifically, Oda mentioned that the live-action series is making good progress and that he has already seen the base footage of Season 1. Oda then said that he’s the most worried about how the show will turn out. But he said that the footage so far “actually looks amazing.” This should be exciting news for One Piece fans. While we have yet to get our first proper look at the series, Oda thinking it’s good should mean we are in for a proper adaptation. Right now, there’s no word yet on when Netflix will release a first look or a trailer for the One Piece live-action series.
