Jackman, who played the Marvel mutant for 17 years, vacated his role after 2017’s Logan. But he is set to re-scratch his claws as Wolverine for an anticipated comeback alongside Reynolds in the upcoming Deadpool 3.
In 2009, the actors met for the first time in Wade Wilson’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds had long pleaded with Jackman for a Deadpool franchise collaboration, and he finally agreed, making Reynolds’ dream a reality.
“To get to be on set with one of my closest friends each and every day is a dream come true. But to do it with these two iconic characters side by side, that’s beyond our wildest dreams.” Reynolds reacted to Jackman’s approval.
In October, the Wolverine star told Variety that he had an epiphany while watching the first Deadpool film to agree to Reynold’s request to reprise his role.
He recalled, “I went to a screening of Deadpool. I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’ All I kept seeing in my head was 48 Hours with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy,” he said. “So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.”
The friendship between the two actors began with actress Scarlett Johansson. Reynolds was previously married to the Black Widow star from 2008 to 2011. At the time, Johansson was also best friends with Jackman.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled to premiere on Nov. 8, 2024.
