Uesugi’s announcement as Kuwabara was made via a Tweet on the Netflix Japan Twitter account. The Tweet came with an accompanying image which gives us our first look at Kuwabara in the live-action show. Shuhei Uesugi is a Japanese actor who has starred in several TV dramas and films. Some of his work includes playing Kannozaki in the 2018 film, River’s Edge, along with Shin’ichiro Kazama in the 2022 movie, My Boyfriend in Orange. Regarding his casting, Uesugi shared (via IGN): With this announcement, the main cast of the Yu Yu Hakusho series is complete. The reveal of the series’ cast started on July 16 with the announcement of the actor for Yusuke, followed by the reveals of Kurama and Hiei in the following days. Yu Yu Hakusho began as a manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of Hunter x Hunter. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 1990 to July 1994. The series proved to be popular enough that it received a TV anime adaptation by studio Pierrot which ran for 112 episodes from October 1992 to December 1994. The series’ story follows Yusuke Urameshi, a juvenile delinquent that dies in an accident after saving a young boy from an oncoming car. Due to his unexpected act, Yusuke wasn’t sent to the Underworld for his delinquency. Instead, he was given a series of tests which he passed, enabling him to be returned to life but as an “Underworld Detective.” Netflix announced the Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series back in 2020. While the main cast and first look at the characters have been announced, Netflix has yet to release a trailer for the series. The Yu Yu Hakusho live-action is set to release on Netflix in December 2023.
