According to Deadline, Netflix is officially developing a sequel to The Gray Man with Gosling returning to star and the Russo brothers coming back on the director’s chair. Stephen McFeeley, who co-wrote the first film with his writing partner Christopher Markus, is penning the screenplay solo.
In addition, they also announced that they are working on a spinoff of the film that is also based on the book series by Mark Greaney. While the plot details are under wraps except that it will be “a little more edgy and experimental,” Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese were tapped to pen the script.
“The sequel will be inspired by the Mark Greaney novel,” Joe Russo teased. “Translating from one medium to another often requires interpretation but we have an incredible amount of source material from an amazing offer. We’ll draw on that for the sequel.”
It is great to hear that we’re getting more Gray Man films after their seemingly successful debut on the streamer during the weekend as evidenced by the audience scores and its no. 1 ranking in charts in 92 countries. We can safely assume that there are audiences who are looking forward to seeing the continuation of the film.
The first film centers on a shadowy CIA agent (Gosling) who uncovered damning agency secrets and is being hunted across the globe by a sociopathic rogue operative (Chris Evans) who’s put a bounty on his head. It also stars Ana de Armas, Alfre Woodard, Billy Bob Thornton, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, and Julia Butters.
