In a response to IGN’s tweet, Johnson shuts down the competition remark between Black Adam and Black Panther 2’s respective box office records, insisting that his franchise has yet to establish its reputation and asking for an opportunity to grow.
Despite spending only nearly two weeks on the now-showing side, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a deafening opening and consistently met milestones with box office marks. According to CBR, Black Panther 2 reached a global record of $546 million in its second weekend.
Black Adam, which was released before Black Panther 2, set its own personal milestone by achieving a $366 million worldwide box office mark after its fifth week, while tying with another DCEU film, Shazam!, reports Collider.
Since time immemorial, the MCU and DCU fans have always engaged in a heated debate over their movies’ box office performances. Despite this, many people rally behind The Rock as he defends his film, which he gave time and effort to produce, with or without it doing well on the numbers.
However, other people are commenting that Black Panther is not to be compared with Black Adam, as they are not on the same level. Black Panther is an ode to the black community that goes beyond a typical film, while Black Adam is just a normal superhero movie.
Nonetheless, both films matter and work for their respective audiences. Viewers have to realize that the box office mark doesn’t always come with numbers, but rather the concept of having nothing to degrade in terms of anything.
Black Adam and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are now showing in theaters.
