In addition to the upcoming animated project, there are currently several TMNT movies in the works, as well as a live-action movie. However, there’s just as much happening on the video game side of TMNT. While we already have two brand-new video games out now (although The Cowabunga Collection is actually a compilation of several TMNT gaming titles), it has been reported that there’s another TMNT video game in the works.
Fanbyte reports that UK magazine Toy World has announced that a “Triple-A” TMNT video game is in development, with a release date of 2023. Here’s the excerpt from this month’s issue of the magazine: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back with a new look and a new movie. Paramount will be launching an extensive new range of action figures and plans to expand further at the back end of the year. Collectors are being served by nostalgic gaming releases including an already launched new retro themed game: Shredder’s Revenge. Paramount is also planning a remaster of Konami’s The Cowabunga Collection at the end of the year and will launch a brand-new original Triple-A game in 2023.
Though it remains to be seen what the AAA TMNT game will be, many fans will be undoubtedly craving an open-world game in which players can assume control of any one of the four Ninja Turtles in New York City. And why wouldn’t they be craving such a thing? After all, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Avatar are all getting open-world titles, with Hogwarts Legacy (2023), The Star Wars Project (TBA), and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (2023).
Needless to say, the time is ripe for such a game. And if you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ll realize that we’re not alone in our desire to see an open-world TMNT game become a reality. Recently, artist/animator “Chase/SpaceDasher” created a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “mod” for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered (2018) on the PC. Yes - they’ve brought the Turtles into their New York City playground! Check out their announcement via Twitter below:
The mod sees the four Turtles replace the Spider-Man avatar, and it’s actually pretty seamless, which is something of a bitter pill, because suddenly the idea of an open-world TMNT game seems so close yet so far. If you wish to take a look for yourself, check it out below:
Here’s to hoping that the newly reported “Triple-A” game will finally give fans the pizza-like craving they desire. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) will be released in theaters on August 4, 2023 by Paramount Pictures. The film is being produced by comedy duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by Jeff Rowe. It follows Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, TMNT, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. However, while it will be the seventh theatrical TMNT movie, it will not be connected to any of the previous entries in the franchise.
