In honor of the release of his new upcoming film Babylon, Maguire hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit and one of the questions he responded to was to a Spider-Man fan asking if he knows about the Bully Maguire inside fandom joke. To that, the actor responded with: “Fairly neutral. I did see the Bully Maguire videos, which was a funny discovery.”
If this isn’t enough to cause an uproar in pop culture history, when asked about a specifically known meme maker, RaimiMemes, the actor had one thing to say: “Yes! Love him.”
Check out some of the fan reactions below:
The ‘Bully Maguire’ memes basically began gaining more attention when one specific scene from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movie was being used out of context. The scene in question is when Peter Parker’s iconic line was first told. When Peter Parker was demanding a fair share of the money after winning his underground wrestling match, the boss behind the match tells him, “I missed the part where that’s my problem.”
Unfortunately, karma immediately struck back when Parker saw his boss getting robbed of his money and he simply let the thief slip away. When confronted why he didn’t stop him, Tobey’s Spider-Man says the same line in return, noting how the tables have turned. Of course, the internet being the internet, has used this line in various edits as an inside joke in the fandom, thus Tobey earning the nickname, “Bully Maguire.”
You can catch Tobey Maguire on Spider-Man: No Way Home on various streaming platforms. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently slated for release on March 29, 2024.
