As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, during yesterday’s earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that they are resetting the DC franchise with a 10-year plan although he didn’t provide any specific details about how they are exactly going to execute it.
“You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman — these are brands that are known everywhere in the world,” Zaslav said. “We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business where we are going to focus, where there is going to be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. We believe we can build a much more sustainable business.”
As anticipated, Zaslav cited the Disney-owned Marvel Studios as their inspiration for their roadmap to the DC franchise’s success under their management. He recently brought in former Disney film chief Alan Horn to be his adviser.
“It’s very similar to the structure Alan Horn, [former Disney CEO] Bob Iger and Kevin Feige put together very effectively at Disney. We think we can build a much stronger, sustainable growth business out of DC,” he added. “As part of that, we are going to focus on quality. We are not going to release any film before it’s ready… DC is something we can make better.”
As some fans pointed out, past managements of the studio have also made long-term plans for the DC franchise before pivoting to them as a result of one of the film’s failures. However, it looks like Zaslav is really committed to making the DC franchise a top property for them and making them as successful as the MCU.
Obviously, we don’t know yet if they’ll end up succeeding with their plan as it will take years before we see the results. It will all depend on the team that Zaslav will hire to handle the DC franchise and whether they will be able to execute the promise that they made during the earnings call.
