Speaking with TheWrap, director Michael Giacchino was asked about his thoughts on the previous rumors that Blade was going to show up in his special. While he revealed that the idea was considered very early in the process, he denied that they actually had any plans for him to appear in the special at all. “God, I love the internet. Anyway, there was a brief moment when we thought, in the development process, ‘Oh it would be cool if you did this and that.’ But the truth is, as you start getting into the story and as you start developing a lot of those things that in the very beginning are just shiny extras, drop off,” Giacchino said.
“You don’t need them. And I read one thing where they’re like, ‘Well due to scheduling conflicts.’ I’m like, well it never even got anywhere near trying to schedule it. It was just something that as a thought, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be cool if, if, if.’ And a lot of those ifs go away, not because the schedule conflicts, but because you don’t need them.” Considering the direction that they went with the story, it now makes sense to see why Blade was never considered to be part of the special even for just a cameo since they really tried to make it a very self-contained story that doesn’t heavily connect with the other MCU properties. Even without a Blade cameo, the special was able to work because of its own story and the unique style that Giacchino did. While some may be disappointed that the character didn’t appear, who knows, we might see Jack Russell and Blade appear together in a future MCU project at some point.
