Ever since Disney purchased Fox Studios, Marvel fans have been expecting the mutants such as Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storm eventually join the MCU. Rumors of a Mutant project have been circulating for a while and it was already confirmed that Kamala Kahn was a mutant at the end of Ms. Marvel, but when will the X-Men arrive in the MCU?
When is X-Men coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Disney and Marvel Studios haven’t officially announced when the X-Men will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sadly, no X-Men title was revealed during the MCU panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, but Kevin Feige hinted at when fans can expect the X-Men in the MCU. Responding to a question from Brandon Davis of Comicbook.com, Feige shared a hint. Davis jokingly asked, “Phase 10, is that gonna be Phase X?” alluding to Marvel’s team of iconic mutants, to which Feige replied: “You wanna wait til Phase 10 for the X-Men?… Alright, that’s longer than I wanna wait”. In an October 2022 interview with Deadline, Feige responded to a question about the X-Men’s MCU arrival: “That’s what Jennifer Walters just asked the robot in the final episode of She-Hulk and I’ll give you the same answer he gave, which is – I don’t remember, no answer is what I think he gave,” Feige said. “But Deadpool and Wolverine [are both in upcoming MCU installment Deadpool 3], y’know, we’re getting close.”
With Phase 4 wrapping up with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Phase 5 fully laid out, it’s likely that the X-Men MCU project in the Multiverse Saga is in Phase 6. At SDCC 2022, only three MCU projects were announced for Phase 6: Fantastic Four and the two upcoming Avengers blockbusters, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel Studios didn’t confirm any other projects for Phase 6, but it’s also possible that the mutants won’t arrive until Phase 7, which won’t presumably launch until at least 2026. Considering the full slate of the Marvel film franchise, it looks like fans will have to wait a few years before they see the X-Men join the MCU. Right now, it looks like the MCU is already planting those first mutant seeds, but it’s assuring to hear from Feige that it wouldn’t take more than a decade for the mutants to arrive. According to journalist Devin Faraci (via Cinema Sangha), the reason why the X-Men weren’t announced at Marvel’s Hall H panel is that Marvel Studios can’t make their X-men film until at least 2025 due to “the contractual situation with the original Fox stuff”. Whether this info is true remains to be seen.
What MCU movies will feature the X-Men?
It’s likely that the X-Men won’t be joining the MCU until 2024 or later, even though Black Panther: Wakanda Forever already introduced the mutant, Namor. Here are the MCU films that are confirmed to feature X-Men characters:
Deadpool 3
On Sept.27, 2022, Ryan Reynolds took it to Twitter to announce that Deadpool 3 is set to release in theaters on Nov. 8, 2024 The video also revealed that the anticipated sequel will feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
