Winston Duke, who debuted as M’Baku – the leader of the Jabari clan and a rival to King T’Challa in 2018’s Black Panther is set to return in Wakanda Forever with a more prominent role. After teaming up with T’Challa to overthrow Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), M’Baku officially became a significant character in the Black Panther franchise and even took part in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Now that Namor (Tenoch Huerta) is confirmed to be the main villain for the Black Panther sequel, M’Baku and the rest of Wakanda must defend their beloved country against the ancient underwater city of Talocan. Although he is now seated on the royal Tribal Council, it seems Duke is still eager for a more substantial narrative for M’Baku. In a recent interview with Collider, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Winston Duke was asked whether he wants a solo movie or Disney+ spinoff for his character, M’Baku. Duke admitted that he’s up for it and wants to explore more of the culture of Wakanda, specifically the Jabari-Lands. See his full quote below:
The Jabari-Land wasn’t furtherly explored in 2018’s Black Panther and was only visited when Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), and Ross (Martin Freeman) were asking for help from M’Baku. Thankfully, Duke’s interest in a M’Baku spinoff can undoubtedly be granted by Marvel Studios, but he might have to share the spotlight with Danai Gurira’s Okoye in the upcoming Black Panther spinoff for her character. Additionally, there’s no doubt that the Jabari-Lands would somehow be featured in either Wakanda Forever or the Okoye sequel. For now, fans just have to wait for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to premiere in theaters on November 11 and witness how it set things up for M’Baku’s potential spinoff.
